Why Should You Use a Stroller on Gravel?
When we first started going out for walks with our children in these rougher terrains, we tried taking our smaller umbrella strollers. They work okay on grass and even on dirt paths since you can use the tires to push through any bumps that might get in your way, but they are a complete nightmare when it comes to gravel and small stones. We soon realized that the small plastic wheels simply couldn’t get a grip on the gravel, so they kept slipping and sliding, throwing us off balance and making it very difficult to push forward. It wasn’t merely annoying either, because the constant unsteadiness also made it a challenge to keep our kids safe and secure. There is also the fact that it’s simply a lot more tiring and difficult to push a stroller when the wheels are constantly moving out of place, which is why we switched to the larger, all-terrain strollers. We have never looked back since!
What Makes Strolling on Gravel Difficult?
If you are pushing a stroller on gravel, you will likely notice just how much more difficult it is than walking, hiking, or jogging on a flat surface like grass. There are a few different reasons for this - the most obvious of which is the unevenness of the terrain. Strolling on gravel is like walking on a giant game of “pick-up-sticks”. There will be bumps and lumps in the ground that you will need to get over, and you will need to apply a lot more pressure to your legs and push yourself a lot harder in order to make it over them. In addition to this, the small gravel rocks will be constantly shifting and moving as you walk, and they will end up getting stuck in the wheels of your stroller and causing them to get stuck and throw you off balance. Because it’s so much harder to manoeuvre and control a stroller in this kind of terrain, it can be frustrating and tiring, which is why you should probably just leave the smaller, lighter strollers at home.
Which Strollers Are Good for Rough Terrain?
All strollers are not created equal, and you want to make sure you are using the best one for your specific needs. While we can’t promise every stroller will work well for every family, we can provide a handful of recommendations that we believe are the best for rough terrain. - Phil and Teds Explorer - This one is our favourite of the bunch, and it’s the one we often find ourselves using when we are planning to stroll on gravel. It has really large, sturdy wheels that can easily handle small rocks and larger bumps in the ground. It’s also very comfortable for your child, has a large sun canopy, and can be folded up and put into the trunk of your car very easily. - Mountain Buggy Terrain - This one is a close second when it comes to our favourite all-terrain strollers. It has large, sturdy wheels, and it also comes with a front wheel lock that is useful when you are on uneven or bumpy terrain. It has a large sun canopy, and it’s also very easy to fold up and put in your car trunk. - Bob Revolution Flex - This one is the perfect choice for parents looking to explore rough terrain with a jogger stroller. It is super sturdy, easy to control, and can be folded up very easily. It has large, sturdy wheels that can easily handle bumpy ground, and it’s also great for jogging on sidewalks and paved paths. - Thule Glide - This is one of the best strollers for off-roading, and it’s perfect for parents who are looking for a stroller that can handle even the roughest terrain. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other options on this list, but it’s also a lot more rugged and sturdy.
If you are like us, you have probably dreamed of taking your little one out on a long trail in the woods with lots of space to roam and explore. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that you will be able to do this up here in Canada where the terrain is far too rough and wild. Fortunately, there are plenty of smaller trails that are a lot easier to negotiate, and they are great places to take your kids in a stroller. That being said, you will need to be careful when choosing your stroller, as most of them aren’t built for the rougher terrain. We strongly recommend using an all-terrain stroller whenever you are out on gravel, as it can make your life a lot easier and more enjoyable.
